Five Shores Brewing is a brewery located in Beulah, Michigan. I began freelancing for them in the Fall of 2020, making beer can labels and became their designer shortly after. For Five Shores, I managed the website, branding, graphics, and coordinated beer release events. Click on some of the boxes below to see some of the work I did for Five Shores.
Five Shores teamed up with Black Calder brewing out of Grand Rapids to produce a big stout brewed with banana bread and candied walnuts. The brewers titled it "Ancestor's Wildest Dreams". The concept was to celebrate the fact that everybody who had a hand in creating this bottle was working on a product that would make their ancestors proud. With that in mind, the label I created has a black background with hand-drawn lettering in gold foil in the center of the label.Behind the title of the beer in a barely noticeable spot gloss are the names of about a hundred people who are celebrated for their achievements in society as well as ancestors of the people who worked on creating this beer. Each bottle was hand-dipped in gold wax as well.
Precious Cargo was the first beer label I worked on for Five Shores. The beer is a fruited IPA. It's one of the flagship beers for the brewery and is always brewed with different fruits. With that in mind, I made a pattern of cargo containers for the label and designed it so every time the beer is brewed, the crates can change color depending on what fruits are using in the brewing process.
Saldanha was a collaboration with an industry friend, Kuma Ofori-Mensa. He came to Five Shores with the idea to create an IPA using sorghum, a plant native to South Africa. I worked with him to create the label for this beer and it turned out to be one of my favorite labels I have created to-date. The label is black with the outlined silhouette of a woman wearing a kente cloth. The kente cloth uses mostly traditional patterns, but one of them is the Five Shores waves. On the printed label, everything in the gold color has a metallic shine. With this beer release, 100 hand screen printed posters with my artwork were made and signed by Kuma and I.
Five Shores was really open to letting me play around with the logo for their merch line. I had a lot of fun making a bunch of different designs for t-shirts, hoodies, hats, stickers, and other merch. This was one of my favorite projects that I worked on for Five Shores.
In 2022, Five Shores Brewing released three varieties of a bourbon barrel aged stout that they had been aging since their opening. This stout was called "Hibernated". Intended to be reused for future releases, I designed a custom, die-cut label with metallic gold for the type and the bear. The result was a label that everybody was super proud of. 150 bottles of each variant were produced and hand numbered.
Every Five is another flagship beer for Five Shores. This IPA is dry hopped every 5 minutes for 10 hours during the brewing process. The result is a VERY hop-forward IPA. For the label, I created the number "5" out of negative space using a photograph I took of a reflective sticker. The printed label has a metallic finish on the part with color.
SideWaves was an Double NEIPA made to support breast cancer awareness. I made the label largely metallic pink, but added some waves in Five Shores blue coming in from the top left. This beer had a large release party and was sold downstate as well as in northern Michigan.
Most of Five Shores' togo beer sales are canned at the bar from the tap. For these cans, I created a generic label that could be used for any beer. The label is applied to the can and when it is filled with beer, the beer information is written on the side of the label with a sharpie.
